Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

I chose a picture of two individuals, a younger man and a younger lady, lying in bed kissing. They seem to have no clothes on and the blankets are pulled over them and their arms are wrapped around one another. While looking for a picture I noticed that a lot of his pictures were of people lying in bed or kissing. The purpose of this picture is to show a couple in bed together. It could be that he is trying to represent love. Maybe this painter had many partners in which is he got into bed with or maybe he just liked painting that setting in particular. The audience that this would attract is probably the younger generation of his time. In my opinion I think that this painting would attract younger women rather than men or older individuals. The genre of this work is obviously a painting.  I am not too sure what the author’s stance on this painting was. I know that he had several paintings of couples kissing or lying in bed so maybe he was promiscuous or maybe they were to represent him and his loved one. It could be that he longed for a woman in his life. It could mean several things.

  1. your comment that "It could be that he longed for a woman in his life," could be very true. if i'm not mistaken, some childhood disease stunted the growth of his legs. having a normal torso and short legs may have prevented him from ever finding true love.
